“I am going to go over to England and bend and break his neck!” -- Monte Barrett
Boxing Herald sat down with heavyweight contender Monte Barrett today, and got his thoughts on the breaking news that he will face England's David Haye. This fight is scheduled for November 15th, in England. Barrett as usual, pulls no punches and very much looks forward to getting back into the ring. Barrett is coming off of a very impressive knockout victory over Tye Fields in June. Haye, will be coming up in weight to make his heavyweight debut. He is coming off of two impressive wins over Jean Marc Mormeck, and Enzo Maccarinelli.
BOXING HERALD – Monte, you have some big news to talk about.
MONTE BARRETT – Yea, I am happy. I got an early Christmas gift. I am happy that David Haye accepted me as an opponent. I am looking forward to this fight November 15th, in London.
BOXING HERALD – Your coming off of an impressive knockout victory over Tye Fields. David Haye is a guy who is known to do a lot of talking. You will be going over to England to fight him, so what's going to happen?
MONTE BARRETT – What is going to happen? I will go over to England and shut David Haye up. He's going to get knocked out before the 3rd round. There will be no more Haye. Haye no more!
BOXING HERALD – Did this guy bite off more than he can chew?
MONTE BARRETT – Oh yes he definitely did. I was so scared to even do an interview about him, because I was talking and he started looking for everyone else. So I said I better just shut up. I saw him fight on HBO, and once he seen me pushing up on him with the press he started responding. I said, “wow” he doesn't want to fight, he's not the real thing.” But after he went through about 4 or 5 guys, he selected me. He bit off way more than he can chew by picking me. I am a true heavyweight, he's weaker and he's slower than me. I will knock him out in 3 rounds. If it goes more than 3, he'll want to retire from boxing because I am going to hurt him real bad.
BOXING HERALD – If this fight does go to the cards, are you nervous about the fact that the fight will be in England?
MONTE BARRETT – No because it's me, him, and the referee. The referee will pick him up off of the floor, and then he will raise my hand. If it does go more than 3 rounds, he will get punched to the point where he will not want that rematch clause.
BOXING HERALD – So there is a rematch clause in the contract?
MONTE BARRETT – Yes.
BOXING HERALD – Have contracts been signed yet, or is this just a verbal agreement right now?
MONTE BARRETT – It's a done deal.
BOXING HERALD – Do you think he will come right at you, or will he respect your power?
MONTE BARRETT – It doesn't make a difference, I am not the incredible hulk. I am bigger than he is though. I am in a good state right now. I am out of a bad marriage, I have my kid now, and I am doing good in my life. I feel 100 percent better than I have ever felt in my life. I am weighing 220lbs right now. I will come into the fight at about 215lbs. Ya'll thought I looked good against Tye Fields? Wait until you see me November 15th. David Haye is overrated, and I will show all of you that soon.
BOXING HERALD – Have you been in the gym staying in shape?
MONTE BARRETT – I have been in the gym for the past 3 weeks. I have been training 3 times a week just so stay sharp, and not burn myself out.
BOXING HERALD – Put it into your words how big this fight is for your career.
MONTE BARRETT – The fight is as big as you want it to be. I wouldn't have gotten here if I didn't avenge my loss against Cliff Couser. After I knockout Haye there is nowhere for me to go but for a title. Right now there is Klitschko, so I will look forward to evening the score with him. Right now, I am just looking forward to fighting David Haye.
BOXING HERALD – Do you think this will get heated between you two leading up to the fight?
MONTE BARRETT – Not really, I have been in this game for 11 years. There is nothing that he can do or say to me that I haven't seen or heard before. At the end of the day, the fight is won in the ring. I am a true heavyweight, a top contender. He is a guy who claims that he wants to be a top contender. This is what boxing needs, for the fans, and for the press.
BOXING HERALD – Do you plan on going to England for the press conference anytime soon?
MONTE BARRETT – Yes, I think there are plans for me to go over there next week.
BOXING HERALD – Do you have any closing thoughts for the fans?
MONTE BARRETT – To the fans, Monte Barrett is back. Don't give up on boxing. I am going to go over there to England and break this pretty boy David Telesco looking ass up. I am focused, I am hungry, and I am desperate. David Haye.... The only “Haye” you will be looking at is the “Haye” that the horses eat. I am going to bend and break his neck!
