Discussion with Nonito Donaire : Boxing Columnists Turned Gossip Writers

Article By

Much has been written about IBO/IBF flyweight champion Nonito Donaire Jr.’s personal life lately. Honestly, I could not help but laugh at some of the recent articles I’ve read about on the subject recently. I had to double check my browser’s address bar to see if I was indeed on a boxing website or if any of the annoying web pop-ups actually redirected me so some TMZ type gossip website. Fresh from his title defense victory over Moruti Mthalane last November 1st, it seems like people’s interest have been strayed more from Nonito’s boxing career to his personal life as of late. One writer even went as deep as talking about Nonito’s sex life and suggests marital advice on how Nonito’s wife should be more like President Obama’s wife. (Yea, I said “writer” because as soon as I read the contents, I made it a point not to check their names so I wouldn’t have to lose respect for them and stop reading their future articles which could very well still be good ones. And last I heard, Michelle Obama is far from a sideline woman and that she makes speeches on behalf of her husband and would slap the burger out of your hand if you said something bad about her) I was actually waiting for a punch line only to realize at the end of the article that the writer was actually being serious.

Honestly, I don’t know a thing about Nonito’s sex life, night life or personal life nor do I want to delve in it and at the same time I don’t know the Obama’s personally to be a judge of character. But I guess these writers do and spend time with Michelle Obama and president Barrack (yay! congrats Pres. Barrack!) Or have a click counter every time Nonito and Rachel go in a room together. Ok, that was a joke. Here is the punch line. I was being sarcastic.

I mean seriously? Don’t we have anything better to write about in boxing than to invade a man’s personal life? Why not talk about new up and coming Filipino boxing prospects? Heck If I had access to them like these other writers do, I’d love to write more about them, but instead they choose to write about Nonito’s marriage. If people really want to help Nonito, why not try to reach him personally and talk about it behind closed doors instead of publishing it to the world? I don’t even know if there is any truth or facts in these write-ups, but all I know is that a person’s marriage is not something an outsider should be throwing unnecessary and unwanted comments on- especially for the whole world to see on the internet. And besides, who on earth are these people to think they are qualified to make these judgments and volunteer to be marriage or family councilors? Some people may have been watching too much of Dr. Phil or Jerry Springer. (Jerry! Jerry! Jerry!) Sorry I just had to do it.

I contacted Nonito to hear his side of this story. He was somewhat upset at the stuff he read but at the same time he’s just amused at some of what’s being written out there. Some even called him “p**sy-whooped” or “under the saya” in Filipino terms, like they actually see and know what’s going on in his life every single day or maybe it’s just the chauvinist in them. To me it’s funny really, how people can point fingers and try to clean other people’s backyards. It’s really just funny because I am not Nonito. But if I was Nonito, I’d be pissed and I’m sure if these writers’ family matters get published on the internet as well for thousands of readers to nitpick then they’d be pissed off just as much. Sadly, that won’t happen because nobody really cares about them, but since Nonito is a celebrity, he is being exploited. I just hope these people can pause and realize that Nonito and his wife are human beings too with their own life and own set of ideologies and feelings as well.

On your part as a reader, I hope before you decide to comment or post stuff on threads, that you also practice responsibility and realize when to draw the line if a writer is taking advantage of you for their own benefit in getting web hits by putting out controversial garbage out there. There are always different sides to a story and a right time and place for everything. This is Nonito’s official statement and chose this place and time to have it published. Straight from Nonito to D Source and now to you. Thanks.

Nonito Donaire’s Official Statement:

“I want to formally address all the recent reports that have come out through the media regarding my personal life. First of all, I am saddened and hurt that my personal family matters are being played out in the media. The recent events have embarrassed me, my wife, my family and my career. I am deeply hurt and disappointed because I have laid everything on the line as a boxer to bring honor to my family and my country and for people that I have trusted and called my friends to expose my personal problems in public is really disheartening.

I will not deny or confirm anything presented especially about my personal life because I believe that these matters should be handled behind closed doors between me and my family and I hope all of you could respect that. But rest assured, me and my family are fine. Every family goes through ups and downs and we are no different.

As far as my manager, Cameron has been a great help to my team since the beginning. We have had to resolve family and team matters before I even met Rachel, and Cameron has helped resolve them ever since he became part of my team. Almost every boxer goes through rifts within their camp and I am disappointed how the media have blown this out of proportion. My first knowledge of any problems in camp was through the barrage of articles I read online.

I respect my father more than any of these writers try to imply that they respect my family by putting out those damaging articles. Blood is thicker than water and my dad will always be my dad. We can resolve anything amongst ourselves since we have a direct line to each other and my dad can always call me if there was a problem.  If those who intended to help meant to help by publishing our personal problems and taking advantage of people’s emotions for the sake of getting people to read their articles for the whole world to see then I hope you can realize that it has done nothing but the opposite. Contacting me personally about my personal problems would have been so much easier and appreciated. I have always been open to the media by phone or even through email for interviews if they really want to get a hold of me.

Lastly concerning Top Rank, Rachel's standing with them has been nothing but praises relating
to the communication and organization she took part in.  If any reporter would like to
call my manager Cameron Dunkin or Top Rank to confirm any of this, please feel free to do so.

Thanks. And again, please respect our privacy.”

Nonito Donaire Jr.
