I see that Nonito "the Filipino Flash" Donaire was less than stellar in his most recent performance; most fans are trying to discredit him already.
Well, let's put this fight in a proper perspective. "Styles make fights," and we must admit that some types of opponents make you look ordinary. Mthalane is an awkward and defense-oriented fighter who gave Donaire a hard time. It was the stylistic matchup that made it so and not because of Donaire's lack of skills.
I feel that the Filipino Flash was beginning to break down the defense of Mthalane in round six when that cut on the eyelid caused a stoppage. I bet that Donaire is not satisfied himself with the way it ended. But that's just the way it is.
Now Donaire should be congratulated for winning that fight. After all, the stoppage was caused a legitimate punch. The doctor's recommendation to have it stopped was fair for Mthalane, as a serious injury may only cut short his boxing career.
******
Nonito doesn't need a rematch against Mthalane and has to move on against bigger fish. With Darchinyan's KO win against Mijares, a rematch between the Filipino Flash against the Raging Bull is a must. This is the stylistic matchup that will give the fans their money's worth.
I still feel that Donaire still has Darchinyan's number and will knock him out in the late rounds. But with Vic's current string of impressive victories, a Donaire victory may not be as sure a bet as it once was.
Anyway, Donaire must move on and stop thinking about his unimpressive performance against Mthalane. Life goes on and he has bigger (and more exciting) fish to fry.
